Outdoor Leadership

In continuing our efforts to provide positive contributions to our community, the Outdoor Centre is very pleased to be a key supporter in the formation of a new National Organization, called the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC). Outdoor educators, program providers and guides from across Canada have created the OCC to address accessibility to wilderness issues that affect Canadians from coast to coast.

The OCC is currently designing a new certification process, which will train and certify teachers, camp leaders, volunteer leaders and others who lead young people through low-risk outdoor environments. This course will offer what they need to know for routine trips and excursions, and keep outdoor activities affordable and accessible to everyone.

The first of these certification courses, “Outdoor Leadership" Level 1 (Hiking) has two dates available for registration below.

It’s just one course, however it’s a big step for Alberta – and Canada since it establishes standards for those who lead outdoor wilderness activities. Perhaps more importantly, a course like this will educate more people by addressing the chronic shortage of trained outdoor leaders for youth groups. All in all it’s a good thing.
