Taking a beginner course from one of the Outdoor Centre's experienced guides and instructors is the best way to explore the outdoors for the first time. The driving force behind the success of the Outdoor Centre has been our passionate coordinators who have developed quality programs based on their expertise and a commitment to introducing individuals to outdoor pursuits. The majority are U of C graduates who are industry leaders and certified professionals and have extensive guiding experience and knowledge.

Cycling Instructor and Repair Specialist
Salary Range: $15.00 - $25.00/hr (commensurate with experience and position)
A. NATURE
& SCOPE
During April - August and/or September, successful
applicants would be a cycling instructor for mountain bike riding courses and
bicycle repair courses. These
courses run periodically during the week, evenings and weekends. The courses range from introductory to
intermediate skills. The majority
of the course will take place on campus with the occasional course in the Bragg
Creek area. The majority of
participants are adults and you would be required to provide professional and
safe leadership with quality instruction and guiding. To ensure full time working hours (if desired) the
applicant would also work as a customer service representative with a gear
specialty which would include taking a leadership role in our bike repair
facility. This would involve
scheduling work, communicating with customers, ordering parts/supplies and maintaining
rental bikes as well as customer repairs.
Approximately 2 days a week will be spent in our repair shop and the remainder
would be instructional and guiding. Successful applicants would report to the Cycling
Program Coordinator and Customer Service Manager.
B. CHARACTERISTIC
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cycling Instructor and Repair Specialist must be able to:
-Work most weekends (April – June) and some evenings
to instruct riding clinics and bicycle repair courses.
-Be a passionate and skilled cyclist with a good
working knowledge of bicycle repair.
-Have the ability to plan and teach quality courses
from 3hours to a full day.
-Provide a safe learning environment and able to
conduct themselves in a professional manner.
-Ability to establish a good rapport with
clients.
-Have proficient backcountry skills and
education to lead a group safely in remote settings.
-Actively check out and ride in areas that are
new to them prior to leading a course.
-Promote other Outdoor Centre programs during
each course.
-Abide by
the Outdoor Centre’s Policies and Procedures.
Rental Shop
To perform gear
maintenance and take responsibility for a gear area and have the ability and
resourcefulness to work alone and problem solve. To assist with customer service operations as required. Answer
to the full time supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS
- First Aid
Certification
-Valid Driver’s
License
-General knowledge
and experience in outdoor activities and cycling opportunities in Calgary &
area.
-Any Outdoor
Pursuits training and/or teaching experience an asset.

SKI REPAIR TECHNICIANS Full & Part-time positions available
Salary Range: $13.72 - $20.00 /hour dependant on experience. Some training available.
Period: October 2009 - March 2010
These positions are responsible for repair, maintenance and binding installation for a variety of skis (i.e. cross country, down hill, back country, snowboards). This would include work on the Outdoor Centre rental skis as well as client equipment. In addition to regular scheduled hours for ski work there will be an opportunity to teach ski repair techniques to Outdoor Centre course participants. Although some training will be available, applicants are required to have a good working knowledge of ski maintenance. At least one position will require that the applicant be familiar with ski tuning machines (i.e. grinders and edgers).

a) The position is temporary during our winter season, and you must be available to work over the Christmas and New Year's holiday period in order to be considered.
