Taking a beginner course from one of the Outdoor Centre's experienced guides and instructors is the best way to explore the outdoors for the first time. The driving force behind the success of the Outdoor Centre has been our passionate coordinators who have developed quality programs based on their expertise and a commitment to introducing individuals to outdoor pursuits. The majority are U of C graduates who are industry leaders and certified professionals and have extensive guiding experience and knowledge.
The Outdoor Centre offers plenty of opportunities for you to learn, play and earn some cash. With on-campus convenience, The Outdoor Centre is a vibrant place to work, with busy periods during weekends and holidays.


The Outdoor Centre has the following employment opportunities:


• Part-Time Hiking and Snowshoeing Leader

Work Term: December through March, with the chance to stay on for summer 2012.

Work Area: Calgary, Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park

Answers to the Hiking Coordinator

Job Description: Lead snowshoe trips and ice walks in Kananaskis and Banff over the winter.

Trips are mainly weekends, with occasional weekdays available. All trips meet in Calgary.

Leaders also give evening lectures on hiking and snowshoeing basics, navigation, and related skills.

Successful candidates will be strong outdoorspeople with well-developed leadership skills and a passion for introducing others to the mountains. Successful candidates will be available 3-6 weekend days a month, and willing to meet groups inside Calgary.

Qualifications:

  • Experience leading hiking/snowshoeing
  • Familiarity with hiking/snowshoeing trails in the local area
  • Wilderness First Aid (40-hour minimum, 80-hour preferred)
  • OCC Leadership Level 1 preferred
  • ACMG Assistant Hiking Guide or Day Hiking Guide preferred
  • IGA Apprentice or Professional Interpreter preferred
  • Class 4 Drivers' License preferred
  • Other relevant certifications considered
